Henrik Lundqvist has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame
With an illustrious career behind him, longtime New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist can finally say he is in the Hall of Fame. Lundqvist, the one-time Vezina trophy winner, is part of the 2023 Hall of Fame class.
“I have to tell you that even when I was drafted by the Rangers, a career in the NHL seemed too good to be true,” Lundqvist told The Post in a phone conversation. “I remember thinking that I had so much work to do in order to get to that level.
“It wasn’t until two years later that I thought it could be possible when I came to a Rangers prospect camp in Calgary. That’s when I started to think it could be real. But this? The Hall of Fame? No. That was not something I could ever have imagined.
“To have the kind of career I did, I think of so many players who were such a big inspiration to me and of so many teammates who were such a big part of my success,” Lundqvist said. “It was really cool to get that phone call today.”
The Swedish goaltender is on the Mount Rushmore of goaltenders in this era. Lundqvist has accumulated 459 regular season wins in 871 starts. King Henrik has stopped close to 24,000 shots and added on 64 shutouts in his regular season career. On top of that, Lundqvist has had 10 shutouts in the playoffs and 61 playoff wins.
He has also had a solid Olympics career. In 15 career Olympic game appearances, Lundqvist ranks second all-time in wins with 12 for team Sweden.
Now with his playing days over, Lundqvist is currently working as a studio analyst for NHL on TNT and has become one of the most prominent figures in hockey broadcasting.
