Hard Knocks Shows Inside Look How Bears Missed Out On Matthew Judon

The Falcons ended up trading for Matthew Judon but it turns out that the Bears were heavily involved in trade talks. In fact, they were willing to trade a third round pick as well. They just had an extra stipulation involved.

If Chicago was going to make the trade for Judon, they wanted a contract extension worked out as part of the trade. Something the Falcons didn’t need and never proceeded to do even after the trade.

“I’m tormenting myself, but if you have your own guardrails that we put up to help us stay in the lane — we surely pressed up against them to acquire the player,” Bears general manager Ryan Poles told director of football administration Matt Feinstein during Tuesday’s edition of “Hard Knocks” on Max.

“But when it comes to losing all flexibility, like I don’t think that would be smart, even if he has success. Now, if he has 20 sacks or something, yeah, it’ll make me sick.”

“We try to do a really good job of creating parameters that make sense for our club and that put our club in a position to be successful now, but also down the road,” Poles said.

“I don’t want the club stuck in a position where we have a player that’s here, we’ve given up a draft pick and we haven’t had a resolution on a contract.”

I can’t believe I’m actually going to say this but I’m actually going to compliment Poles for the first time in my life. The guy is a total idiot and you’re an insane person if you haven’t figured that out yet. However, this time, credit to Poles for actually having impulse control.

The guy is actually learning on the job! Credit to him for keeping it in his pants. Maybe the guy finally figured out that flushing draft picks down the toilet (AKA Chase Claypool and Montez Sweat) isn’t a good idea. Especially if you’re not keeping the player long term. I’ll never understand how nobody took the keys away the second the Claypool deal went down but here we are. Hey, maybe Poles has critical thinking skills! Good for him.
