The Hansel Robles Rollercoaster Is Finally Over In Boston
We knew the implosion was coming. We just didn’t know when. Hansel Robles has likely pitched his last game for the Red Sox after the right-hander was DFA’d after last night’s loss to Tampa. Boston will now have seven days to trade or waive Robles but it’s likely his time with the team is done.
The Robles rollercoaster during his time in Boston can’t be seen as all bad. I’m not sure the Red Sox make the postseason a year ago without him. Robles pitched huge late inning situations for the Sox last year and was brilliant. In September and October of last year, Robles pitched 12.2 IP, 0 R, 4 BB, 15 K, 3 Saves, and 2 Holds. Considering the fact that the Red Sox traded a nobody prospect Alex Scherff, it’s hard to complain.
The implosion was coming. That’s who Robles is. When he loses it, things get ugly fast. In 15 appearances since May 1, he owns a 9.00 ERA. That also includes five blown saves. With Boston facing a potential roster crunch, Robles was the man that had to go. It’s hard to blame the Sox for pulling the plug on the experiment.
The fact of the matter is, Boston needed to do something. Brayan Bello takes his spot on the roster today and will make his first start for the team. Robles’ 40 man spot will go to Chris Sale who needs to be activated off the 60 day IL. The only logical man to cut was Robles.
We knew this day would come. Fading Hansel Robles and being on the right side of the argument is usually the best one to be on. The Sox got the good Robles at the perfect time last year. Like any rollercoaster, eventually, it’s time to get off the ride. I think I can speak for every Sox fan in saying our anxiety-ridden bodies watching Robles pitch is too much for anyone to handle and I won’t miss it.
