Gus Malzahn is pulling a Chip Kelly. No, this is not a drill. Malzahn was the head coach at UCF. He’s quitting on them so that he can be an assistant with Florida State. Malzahn will take the offensive coordinator job with the Seminoles under Mike Norvell.
VIA On3 (side note: I still don’t understand the marketing behind On3. Who names their site that? Really, really, bad. How do you not come up with something better than ON and a number?).
“Gus Malzahn is set to resign as UCF head coach and is set to become the offensive coordinator at Florida State, On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed. The Knights’ season ended with a 4-8 record following a loss to Utah on Friday.
“Malzahn is expected to become Florida State’s primary play-caller, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who first reported the news. That means Mike Norvell will be giving up play-calling duties on offense.”
Are we sure this is a good idea by Florida State? They are aware that Malzahn literally runs a high school offense, right? A high school offense that is centered around a lot of QB run plays. Apparently, Norvell and Malzahn are friendly as the two crossed paths somewhere during their coaching journey in the state of Arkansas. Beyond that, I have no idea why this move is being made.
Let’s be real about the UCF tenure by Malzahn. That team had a ton of talent on it and they just went 4-8. KJ Jefferson regressed as a player under him too after transferring in and that part isn’t deniable.
Norvell better be right about this. If he isn’t, it could cost him his job after a nightmare season at FSU.
