Gregg Popovich Claims He Slept Through Winning The Victor Wembanyama Lottery
I don’t believe him. Can I just start there? Anyway, there is a story that’s popping off right now about Gregg Popovich learning about when the Spurs won the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery so they could draft Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs head coach claims he was sleeping on a plane when San Antonio got the ping-pong balls to land in their favor.
“The draft comes and all that, I watch some film, but I didn’t really pay any attention to it because you don’t think you’re gonna get him,” Popovich said Sunday night in Los Angeles.
“But there wasn’t much I could do. I was asleep. My son-in-law nudged me, woke me up and said, ‘Hey, you guys got the first pick.’ I said, ‘Oh, that’s good.’ After that, I started watching film and seeing who he was.”
“I think one has to be careful not to assume that you have the answers,” Popovich said. “It’s just like your children, you don’t know how they’re really going to end up. But this young man has already been taught many important lessons and understands the priorities. He’s not fazed by the hype or anything like that. His parents already did the job with him. So I just have to not screw it up.”
Nope. Not buying it. No chance he didn’t care. No chance he slept through that. Absolutely no way Popovich didn’t care about this. Not when knowing that Wembanyama was going to change the franchise overnight.
I can’t be the only one that doesn’t buy his story. Feel free to comment because this man is capping. Only way he’s not is if the NBA told him they were going to rig the lottery… which feels possible. They were number one in the karma rankings for a reason.
