USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter has decided to name an all-MLS roster for the U.S.’s January camp and friendly match against Slovenia.
The 25-man roster includes 17 players who are uncapped with the national team; 13 are also eligible to play at this summer’s Olympics in Paris, where 15 of the 18 players on the Olympics roster have to be under the age of 23.
The all-MLS roster will train for nine days in Orlando, Fla. The group will then play its friendly match against Slovenia in San Antonio on Jan. 20.
“This January camp does have a different look,” Berhalter said Friday. “And the reason why is because the Olympics are coming up and we’re able to use this opportunity to purposely bring in Olympic age-eligible players.”
Miles Robinson leads the roster in terms of experience. The center-back who recently signed with the defending MLS Supporter’s Shield winners FC Cincinnati has 27 caps with the national team, the most of any other players in the camp.
Other players with national team experience include fellow defenders DeJuan Jones, Shaq Moore, James Sands, John Tolkin and Caleb Wiley. Midfielder Aiden Morris and attacker Cade Cowell have also been capped by the USMNT before.
There are plenty of uncapped prospects included by Berhalter that U.S. fans should be excited about seeing. Goalkeeper Drake Callender made a name for himself after helping a Messi-lead Inter Miami side to the 2023 Leagues Cup title.
Jack McGlynn and Diego Luna were part of the U.S.’s roster at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, alongside Cowell and Wiley. Duncan McGuire also adds a bit of intrigue up top as the 22-year-old looks to build off a positive first season in the MLS with Orlando City as a potential move to Europe looms.
In terms of players who missed the roster–Zach Steffen and Walker Zimmerman immediately come to mind. Steffen was not included after his recent move to the Colorado Rapids while Zimmerman misses as he continues to his return from an Achilles injury.
FC Cincinnati striker Brandon Vazquez was also not included as he looks to solidify a move to Liga MX side Monterrey in the coming days.
