Greg Cronin named next Anaheim Ducks head coach

After not renewing Dallas Eakins‘ contract, the Anaheim Ducks have hired Greg Cronin as their new head coach, the team announced Monday.

(All quotes are from Anaheim Ducks Press Release.)

“While we did cast a wide net in searching for the next head coach, it became clear to me that Greg would be the ideal fit for the position,” said Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek. “Being a young team, I felt we needed a teacher of the finer points of the game, and someone who has worked extensively over time with talented young players, helping them develop into successful NHL players. Greg has done all that and more, and we are excited to name him head coach of the Anaheim Ducks.”

Cronin brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Ducks organization. With an impressive coaching background spanning over two decades, he has worked with various teams at both the collegiate and professional levels.

Prior to joining the Ducks, Cronin served as an associate head coach for the Colorado Avalanche, playing a crucial role in shaping their defensive system and guiding the team to remarkable achievements.

The decision to bring Cronin on board aligns with the Ducks’ commitment to revitalizing their defensive play. The hiring of Cronin demonstrates the organization’s proactive approach to addressing its defensive shortcomings and building a more formidable team.

The 60-year-old Cronin will start his first stint as an NHL head coach. As he previously had roles as an assistant coach, and several other roles in the AHL, NCAA and USA hockey.

Cronin spoke on his newfound opportunity with a young Ducks roster.

“I’m excited and honored to be named head coach of the Anaheim Ducks,” said Cronin. “This team has a fantastic future ahead, and I’m very grateful to the Samueli family and Pat Verbeek for entrusting me with this amazing opportunity.”
