George Holani. Do I have thoughts? Sure I do. Holani is another one of these running backs in the 2024 NFL Draft class. Let’s talk about the Boise State product.
For starters, this guy has Boise State for what seems like forever. No transfer portal nonsense. He’s been getting significant carries on the blue turf since he was a freshman back in 2019. Straight five year career for Holani at Boise where he was the primary runner. Not something you see all the time with prospects. Even rarer with how busy the transfer portal is.
The problem with Holani is he’s been hurt. But hurt all the time. He’s been healthy for two out of his five collegiate seasons. It’s been lower body injury after lower body injury. He’s almost like a hockey player that’s constantly on the shelf and just can’t keep his legs going. How high are you willing to go with a guy that’s been busted up so many times? As an old injured former athlete, I can promise you they take a toll.
Holani, born in New Zealand, moved to the LA area and become a four star guy coming out a high school. He checks in at 5-foot-10, 208. At the end of the day, Holani rushed for 3,596 rushing yards, which is 5th in program history.
It was a very up and down Combine for Holani. Some of the raw numbers are solid. 10’7″ on the broad, 39 on the vert, 24 on the bench, and a 4.52 in the 40 are all solid numbers. I didn’t like his movement skills at all. No juice in the knees. None and historically that usually matters most over the years since I’ve been doing this. For what it’s worth, Holani also had a rat tail during the drills and it just couldn’t have looked more hideous.
I did not catch any Boise State games during the year. I don’t know what to tell you. There are just better games on Saturday. For what it’s worth, this isn’t a program that’s had immense success putting out NFL prospects at this position. It’s really only Jay Ajayi, who had his own set of knee issues. Doug Martin had one really good year and Alexander Mattison essentially died the second someone believed in him. The rest of the list are total flameouts.
I have an undrafted grade on George Holani. Probably wouldn’t call him after the draft either if I’m looking to sign undrafted guys. Just other backs in the class I like way more. It is what it is.
