Take Geno Smith off the board. The 2023 NFL Free Agency period is about to open but the Seahawks starting quarterback won’t be hitting the open market. Geno and Seattle have agreed to a new contract. Let’s just say it’s going to be quite the raise!
Jordan Schultz of theScore was the first to report the news:
Smith, 32, had a career year in 2022. Smith completed a league-high 69.8 percent of his throws for 4,282 yards, 30 TDs, and 11 INTs en route to a comeback player of the year award. Some would say that he only came back from the bench so he shouldn’t have won it. Some would say those thoughts are valid. Smith also made the Pro Bowl this past year if anyone still cares about that.
This deal isn’t totally surprising. Both sides really wanted to make this work. Contract talks were trending in the right direction and Seattle really wanted to do right by the player here. Based on everything that happened with Russell Wilson, running this thing back with Geno Smith doesn’t sound like the worst alternative.
The only thing that really needs to be talked about is does this deal change anything for Seattle’s draft plans? Maybe Seattle still drafts a quarterback but not in the first round? Based on the way the quarterbacks performed at the Combine, maybe Seattle is still willing to go quarterback at the top of the draft. Can I interest you in some CJ Stroud? On an even deeper level, what does this contract mean for Daniel Jones?
