Carroll: Seahawks could draft QB regardless of Geno Smith

The Seattle Seahawks could draft a quarterback in the first round of this upcoming draft, regardless of Geno Smith’s situation.

Seattle has a ton of draft capital in the first round of this season’s draft. They have the fifth and 20th overall picks. The 20th pick is theirs by the result, and the fifth was acquired when they fleeced the Denver Broncos in exchange for Russell Wilson.

Head coach Pete Carroll interviewed with the media before the combine on Tuesday and expressed the team’s interest in quarterbacks for this upcoming April.

“We’re totally connected to the quarterbacks coming out,” Carroll said in a video from The Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta. “This is a really huge opportunity for us. It’s a rare opportunity. We’ve been drafting in the low 20s for such a long time. You just don’t get the chance at these guys. So we’re deeply involved with all of them.”

The quarterbacks available in this upcoming draft are looking to be really strong. Most mock drafts have four quarterbacks to be selected in the first round. The most popular names are Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis, and the wild card, Florida’s Anthony Richardson. While these guys are likely first-round locks, there could even be six gunslingers taken on Day 1 this year.

I don’t blame Carroll and Seattle here. They are looking toward the future. It has to sting for Smith, however.

The Geno Smith Situation

Smith, 32, had a stellar season in a contract year for the Seahawks. The Comeback Player of the Year led the NFL in completion percentage, in a year where he was a castaway to a Seattle team that everyone assumed was tanking at the time.

Smith seems confident that he’ll be getting a new contract. Or at least he did before Carroll came out and said this to the media.

Geno has definitely earned the starting job in Seattle and barring some miracle, I still expect him to re-sign with the Hawks and start for at least the 2023-24 season.

While this report really surprised me at first, it starts to make a lot of sense. The Seahawks could draft a quarterback and keep him under Smith’s wing for a season or more.

All these prospects have the potential to become strong NFL quarterbacks, and Seattle is keen on selecting their guy. How could you blame them? They don’t want to blow the fifth overall pick.
