Geno Smith, Seahawks extension talks ‘looking really good’

It comes as a surprise to no one that Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks are on a fast track to an extension, likely to lock up Smith for the future.

During an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Geno Smith said that a contract extension with Seattle is “looking really good.”

Seattle has the cap space necessary to retain Smith, projecting to have the sixth most cap space in the NFL in 2023 ($31.34 million).

Smith, 32, had his best career season as a Seahawk in 2022. He led the NFL in completion percentage (70%). Smith started in the team’s 18 games, and even led Seattle to a shocking playoff berth. The quarterback was also nominated for NFL Comeback Player of The Year.

Smith reiterated his support for the Seattle Seahawks when he appeared on The Pivot Podcast. Geno had nothing but good words to say about his current employer.

“I would love to be in Seattle man, I love Seattle. We have a great relationship, and I think we’ll get things worked out,” Smith said.

A potential contract for the quarterback could vary in amount. Some general managers around the league think Geno is worth $30-35 million per season, while others speculate that he could remain on a franchise tag for one more season.

My prediction for a potential contract would be something similar to what Daniel Jones could get: short to mid-range years, around $30 million per season. I would estimate Smith gets three years and $90 million to be the Seahawks quarterback through his age-35 season.

No one expected Geno Smith to be here, except Smith himself. The quarterback famously deflected the haters after the team’s 17-16 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 1. A slogan that he would get trademarked a few weeks later.

“They wrote me off, I ain’t write back!”
