The Field Of Dreams Game Could Have Huge Potential Ripple Effects

It is rare that a midsummer baseball game creates as much buzz as an October Postseason match, but this is precisely what occurred on Thursday, August 12, 2021. The Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees met in the small, unassuming town of Dyersville, Iowa for a game. Why? It is the location of the celebrated 1989 film, Field of Dreams.

The game itself was epic, as the teams went back and forth before White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson ended the night by sending a shot into the corn for a walk-off two-run homer. Chicago won the game 9-8.

With the success of this particular game, Major League Baseball should explore more options for fun locations within the United States. Cooperstown, New York would be an option, as it is home to the notoriously selective Baseball Hall of Fame. Doubleday Field has not hosted an MLB game since 2008, and bringing it back would surely mean a lot to the baseball community.

Major League Baseball does plenty of outreach in other parts of the world, so why not also bring baseball to places stateside that do not get to enjoy it? For instance, Buffalo, New York was spoiled with the Toronto Blue Jays due to COVID-19 protocols in the first half of 2021 – a city built on hockey got to experience an MLB team.

Affiliate towns for MLB teams should be appreciated more. Oklahoma has never seen MLB action yet has two Los Angeles Dodger Minor League affiliate teams: the OKC Dodgers and Tulsa Drillers. It would be such a treat for the fans of those teams to see their former players playing for the parent club in their actual home state.

It may be a tad far-fetched, but some fans were talking about bringing the Sandlot field to life as a Major League Field, commemorating the 1993 film of the same name. This would take place in Utah, another setting that does not get to see MLB baseball at all.

The point being, the United States is a large country, and not everyone has the luxury of going to the ballpark regularly. Growing the sport on North American soil is what is needed, and perhaps that means bringing it to rural and isolated locations, considerable distances away from the big cities.
