FC Barcelona Preparing to Make Xavi Next Manager

FC Barcelona is preparing to make club legend the Xavi the next manager of the Catalan side, per multiple reports, including Fabrizio Romano.

Xavi is the current manager of Al Sadd SC, a team in Qatar’s Stars League. Barca president Joan Laporta will appoint Sergi Barjuan as the interim manager, with Xavi in contract termination talks with his current team.

The 41-year-old will be taking over a hollowed out version of the club he left six years ago. Where once stood Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, now stand Memphis Depay, Philippe Coutinho and Luuk de Jong, among others. The Catalan giants sit ninth in the La Liga table, six points behind first-place Real Madrid. The club is also third in their Champions League group, with three games left in group play.

Xavi was rumored to be the No. 1 option for Laporta and the Barca front office when Ronald Koeman was sacked on Wednesday following a 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano.

The club is clearly wasting no time in securing their new manager. With negotiations ongoing between Xavi and Al Sadd regarding his departure, the timeline for his long awaited return to Camp Nou is still in the air. Back in June, the Terrassa, Spain native announced “it would be a dream to return to Barcelona”, and that day seems to be arriving much sooner than anyone thought. But Barcelona and football fans alike will be on the edge of their seats as we wait for the midfield maestro and tiki-taka style of play to revive a sleeping giant.
