Ronald Koeman Sacked by FC Barcelona

Ronald Koeman has been sacked by FC Barcelona, as first reported by Fabrizio Romano and then confirmed by the club.

An official statement from the club said this regarding Koeman’s firing.

“FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.”

According to Romano, club legend Xavi is considered the favorite to win the job. Xavi is the current manager of Al Sadd a team in Qatar Stars League. Belgian national team manager Roberto Martinez is also being considered. Xavi announced earlier in June that it would be “a dream to return to Barca one day.”

Koeman was fired following two consecutive defeats to Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. The club has lost three of their last four games, sit in ninth place in La Liga and third in their Champions League group, one point behind Benfica with three games left in group play. The Dutch manager played for the club from 1989-1995 before taking over as manager for the Catalan giants in August 2020.
