Justin Fields finally got traded and the Steelers were the team that landed him. As fantasy owners, we have no control over such things. Now that the dust has settled, how should fantasy football owners handle Fields now that he’s in Pittsburgh?
For starters, let’s just make sure expectations are in check. All of this is being reported.
Russell Wilson is the starter.
Justin Fields is the backup.
That’s probably not going to change for the entire season given how stubborn Mike Tomlin is. It took the guy 735 days too long to fire Matt Canada. Wilson could suck the whole year and I’m not positive he will pull the rug from under him. I think you’re looking at 2025 and beyond for Fields. Maybe fantasy playoffs if you’re lucky.
This is all about long term. Dynasty and keeper leagues are the only leagues that should be paying attention to this trade.
Long term? I actually kinda like it. The guy produced almost nothing throwing the ball and was still fantasy relevant. Rushing quarterbacks are a hidden cheat code in fantasy and Fields has that. Plus, Pittsburgh likes to run the ball and will probably remain that way philosophically.
If you can go add Fields to stash for later, I would do it. Not to the point where it breaks you but if there is a reasonable offer to go get him, I would. Mostly because he’s such a threat with his legs it’s almost dumb to not take the risk. There just aren’t a ton of guys in the league that can run like that. He rushed for over 1,100 yards one year. He can’t get 800 with some rushing touchdowns mixed in there? That’s not even including the throwing.
Take the shot but don’t be dumb about it. That’s how I would proceed.
