Analyzing The Donte Jackson For Diontae Johnson Swap

NFL Free agency was banana land and some of the minor transactions got lost in all the madness. Today, I plan on covering the minor trades that went down this week with some thoughts that maybe you should consider. Donte Jackson was traded to Pittsburgh and Diontae Johnson went the other way to Carolina. Let’s talk about what you need to know with this swap.

For starters, both players are in contract years. Jackson, 28, was a second round pick in 2018. Johnson, 28, was a third round pick the year after. At its core, this is a football trade at every sense of the word. A change of scenery that hopefully both guys benefit while each team fills an area of need on their roster. By the way, both players have been hurt a lot in the past too.

If I have to pick a winner in this swap, I think it’s definitely Pittsburgh. One guy has ball skills and the other doesn’t. If you know, you know. With the way Pittsburgh develops receivers, I have no doubt that Mike Tomlin will find another talented young receiver to pair with George Pickens. This draft class is loaded with receivers.

The former LSU product Jackson has talent. He has 14 career interceptions and 10 of which came in his first three seasons. He comes with plus speed too. It’s a lot harder to find a reliable corner that can play and I think the Steelers found exactly that. Plus, they somehow move up in the draft too.

For Carolina, I’m not sure I totally understand this. What was the point of taking Jonathan Mingo and Terrace Marshall in the second round? Are you admitting they’re not that good? In the case of Mingo, I tried to tell you that.

Somehow, the Panthers have gotten rid of the only good part of their team. They actually had some capable guys on the defensive side of the ball and Dan Morgan got rid of them. Jackson, Frankie Luvu, and Jeremy Chinn all gone.

I don’t know what the Panthers are doing but I guess that’s not any different from normal.
