Fantasy Football: Commanders Sign Austin Ekeler

The Commanders found a way to land Austin Ekeler in free agency. Now that Ekeler has found a new home, what does it mean for fantasy football? Ekeler has won a lot of people money in fantasy over the years. Can he do so again now that he’s in Washington? That’s what you’re here for so I’m going to get to the point now instead of dragging on the intro paragraph.

We know it’s going to be a committee between Ekeler and Brian Robinson. That much is clear. Ekeler is just going to be a better version of Antonio Gibson (who signed with New England today). We know that Gibson was a gadget guy for Washington but I’d imagine that Ekeler’s role will have more fantasy relevance. Less punt return stuff, more receiving targets.

Gibson had 48 targets last year with Washington. Can we expect 60-70 for Ekeler? That doesn’t sound like a terrible bet. If that’s the case, Ekeler certainly has valuable. Definitely more so for people that play PPR (I do not play that elementary set of rules).

Robinson deserves a role. He played well last year. The 4.1 YPC mark isn’t sexy but we’re talking about an offensive line that led the league in sacks allowed. Also, Eric Bieniemy is gone and that guy hated running the ball. Nobody ran the ball less than Washington last year. Expect Robinson to get around 180 carries again this year. Robinson should remain the goal line back too.

I like Ekeler this year but it’s all cost dependent. I can buy into the upside. Especially if the Commanders offense takes a step forward with Kliff Kingsbury and a new quarterback. However, I’d just kindly remind people that the days of Ekeler being this top five running back in fantasy are over. I feel farily confident in that remark. Feel free to go after Ekler but don’t over do it in your auction draft.
