RIP Deadspin

Vice Media died at the end of February. Add another to the list of sports media brands that are going under. Deadspin is dead and all of their employees have been laid off. The company has been sold to a European start-up and all of their workers have been locked out of the company Slack.

Jue DiCaro put out this Tweet that was reposted by Front Office Sports.

Imagine working for Deadspin and knowing that literally every single employee they had was deemed as not valuable enough to be worth keeping. I don’t know who needs to hear this but the sports media industry needs to wake up. What you’re doing isn’t enough and I’m quite sure they all got fired because they weren’t creating enough clicks to be worth keeping.

Jim Spanfeller, the chief executive of G/O Media, put out this statement regarding the decision to sell Deadspin.

“The rationale behind the decision to sell included a variety of important factors that include the buyer’s editorial plans for the brand, tough competition in the sports journalism sector, and a valuation that reflected a sizable premium from our original purchase price for the site,” Spanfeller wrote.

“Deadspin’s new owners have made the decision to not carry over any of the site’s existing staff and instead build a new team more in line with their editorial vision for the brand,” Spanfeller continued.

By the way, Trey wrote 30 articles today on NFL Free Agency (some were about hockey). This is number 31. Deadspin produced zero and died in the process. You tell me who’s winning? Wake up people. Everybody else dies and Trey is still here. The day of reckoning is inching closer and closer. When that day comes, just know I will remember and it won’t be pretty for the rest of you. I’ll have more thoughts on that tomorrow in a separate rant.
