Fantasy Football: Chargers Sign Najee Harris

I’m doing fantasy football follow up posts on all of the major free agent moves. I’ve run out of creative intro paragraphs to say with these so if you don’t mind I’m just going to get to the point. Najee Harris to the Chargers is fascinating so let’s have a chat and talk about it.

The landing spot here for Najee is very favorable. How can it not be? Did anybody see what JK Dobbins did in this same offense last year? Dobbins had 905 rushing yards at a 4.6 YPC clip and nine touchdowns. Add in another 32 receptions through the air. Given all of the lower body injuries that Dobbins has had in his career, why can’t Najee replicate that or even surpass it?

Obviously, the offense is a huge factor here. The Chargers were 12th in the NFL in rushing attempts last year but unlike several teams who were ahead of them on that list, Justin Herbert isn’t snatching away a large volume of those carries. As the Chargers continue to improve and Jim Harbaugh further establishes his mentality, they could find their way even higher on that list. We all know Greg Roman by now. He’s going to run the ball and even be stubborn about it.

There is one big roadblock that fantasy managers should be concerned about. I’m not totally convinced that Najee is actually good at football. He’s averaging 3.9 yards per carry during the duration of his four-year career and has totally underperformed after the Steelers drafted him in the first round back in 2021. Let’s just be honest about it… are we sure Jaylen Warren isn’t the better player? It’s definitely a real argument that can be made. It’s not like Najee was trapped in hell either. There are worse landing spots than being the Steelers running back.

Maybe this part is a non-factor but there is always a chance that Najee feels revitalized by returning home. The former Alabama running back is actually from Martinez, California despite playing collegiate ball in the South. Maybe the return of California sunshine will prove to be exactly what he needs. Beyond that fact, I would proceed with caution here. Being interested in Najee makes all the sense in the world for all the reasons we talked about. I’m just not convinced he’s actually a good football player and there’s always a chance the Chargers draft someone considering this is just a one-year deal he signed for. Feel free to buy here but don’t reach at the same time.
