Extension of J.K. Dobbins on Ravens Radar

The career of J.K. Dobbins has been a weird one. Taken in the second round by the Ravens, he was supposed to eliminate a weakness the Ravens had at running back years prior. But ever since being drafted, Dobbins’ career has been riddled with injuries.

The talent has always been there, averaging 5.9 yards per carry for his career. But he has just never been able to stay on the field. After a strong rookie season in 2020, he tore his ACL, LCL and meniscus forcing him to miss the entire 2021 season.

The injury forced him to miss the first half of the 2022 season as well and killed all the momentum he had gained as a rookie.

But now Dobbins enters the last year of his rookie contract. Forcing the Ravens to make a decision. Now they still have time, but HC John Harbaugh seems to be in favor of bringing back the Ohio St. product.

Now this offseason was certainly an interesting one for running backs. Some hit the market due to their respective teams not wanting to extend them to long-term contracts, leading many to believe the Ravens wouldn’t have an interest in resigning Dobbins.

Aside from him playing arguably one of the least valued positions on the field, Dobbins has a career of being riddled with injuries. I mean do you really want to pay significant money for a guy who hasn’t played more than eight games since 2020?

At this point, I think you are better off trying to draft someone else next year and hope they are a hit. Also with that new Lamar Jackson contract, you have to be very careful with how you spend your money.

Me personally? I wouldn’t be using those precious scraps to bring back an injury prone running back. That’s not to say Dobbins is a bad running back though. As I said earlier, he clearly has talent when he’s playing.

Behind a good offensive line, he could do wonders. Maybe if he’s willing to take a pay cut I could get the Ravens re-signing him. He clearly works well with Lamar and helps them establish a more true run game.

I just have a feeling the Ravens are gonna give him too much money for too long. He’s great to bring back on a hometown discount of sorts. But if he’s wanting serious money then I think, you’re better off looking elsewhere.
