ESPN is back at it again. The worldwide leader of firing people have made two more firings right before football season is about to open up. Sam Ponder and Robert Griffin III are both out.
Andrew Marchand Of The Athletic (don’t click the link it’s behind a paywall and you’re an idiot if you pay for that service. I’ll do my duty of linking and dropping the important quotes below.
“ESPN has fired “Sunday NFL Countdown” host Samantha Ponder and analyst Robert Griffin III, sources briefed on the moves told The Athletic on Thursday.”
Marchand goes over several things in his piece. They can basically be summed up like this.
These firings are for financial purposes. Marchand indicates more firings could be on the way at the end of September.
Ponder leaves the host role on “Sunday NFL Countdown” behind. Marchand seems to hint that Mike Greenberg is the favorite to take that role. Nobody even likes Greenberg but whatever.
Marchand also says the hiring of Jason Kelce basically made RG3 feel dispensable.
It seems as though social media behavior by RG3 and Ponder’s past comments on transgender sports may have been factors in the decision.
It’s hard to blame ESPN for moving on from RG3. Some of the things he says is Looney Tunes land delusional. I dare you to watch this entire episode from Marlon Humphrey’s pod (who is also delusional). It’s so bad it literally makes your ears bleed. It won’t be very difficult to replace either personality. It feels like we should be more concerned about who is being fired later in the Fall.
