One of the narratives that has been driving me crazy is people trying to compare the Packers drafting Jordan Love to when they drafted Aaron Rodgers in 2005. IT’S NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE SAME. Let’s break this down.
A: Brett Favre got horny off retirement rumors. Constantly, that guy couldn’t decided whether he was going to retire or not. Even when he would retire, Favre would immediately would want to come back. Favre dug his own grave. He was basically begging the Packers to find his replacement. Rodgers has never done that.
B: Rodgers was considered the best quarterback in the 2005 NFL Draft. He was no worse than second because some people preferred Alex Smith. It was a two horse race. Rodgers could have easily been picked number one overall.
Jordan Love was NEVER in the running to be the number one overall pick. Love is widely considered a project and often regarded as the 4th best quarterback in the draft.
C: Quarterback contracts are different now. Back in those days, rookie contracts were enormous. Rodgers fell because nobody could afford a second rich quarterback contract high in the draft. Rookie contracts have been changed. They’re worth a hell of a lot less now.
D: The Packers let Rodgers slide to them at 24 in the 2005 NFL Draft. Green Bay moved UP for Jordan Love. They went from 30 to 26 and gave up a 4th round pick in the process.
For the love of God, stop comparing Jordan Love to Aaron Rodgers. It’s nowhere similar. I was in favor of trying to find a Rodgers replacement, but this pick makes no sense. This Jordan Love thing is a joke and Aaron Rodgers deserves better. For the record, what has Matt LeFleur done to earn this pick? Everywhere he goes the offense gets worse.
