The Don’t Eat The Cheese series continues with the tight ends. We reviewed the quarterbacks yesterday and if you want to see that post, click here! This position is so weird so I’m going to just keep things moving. No crazy intro paragraph other than reminding you that I own Matthew Berry. You can’t ignore the evidence.
Cole Kmet (Bears)
Cole Kmet is a bad football player. There is zero evidence to suggest he’s a good football player. Yet people continue to take him. Last year was a breakout year for Kmet but now there’s more competition for targets than ever before. Add Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, and Gerald Everett into the offense. Ryan Poles is trying to build a Madden team. It’s spread out Caleb Williams please save us. This isn’t going to be a tight end show and the Bears won’t be that good in any scenario in his rookie year anyway. Pass.
TJ Hockenson (Vikings)
TJ Hockenson is going to miss a ton of time this year. The Vikings tight end is projected to come back around maybe Week 10? Are you willing to carry three tight ends on your roster? You’re not going to have a choice if your alternative tight end has a bye week before Hockenson comes back. This all depends on your league rules but I fail to see the pros over the cons. He much money will he cost when I have to carry him on my team to not play for that long… and at tight end? I’m good. I can wait until next year to take my chances if he’s available.
Dallas Goedert (Eagles)
Are you really paying attention to what’s going on here? I love Dallas Goedert but he’s become a glorified blocking tight end. Which is weird because he couldn’t block at all when he was a rookie and is now really good at it. The more DeVonta Smith becomes involved in the offense, it seems like the less Goedert is asked to do. He’s never going to be more than the fourth fiddle in the offense after they added Saquon Barkley. You don’t pay Barkley to not run him and he’s good in the passing game.
Then Howie pulls off a steal, as he usually does, and brings another Penn State product to the fold in the form of Jahan Dotson. That WR3 role was an area the Eagles were lacking in and now they got their guy. I just don’t see how it’s possible for Goedert to be anything more than a best-ball tight end who will likely finish the end of the year as a totally mediocre fantasy tight end. That right there might even be the best-case scenario as we’re talking about the guy who has missed plenty of time over the last couple of years.
Mark Andrews (Ravens)
I don’t hate Andrews but I’m worried the injuries are piling up. I’m also worried Isaiah Likely will sneak his way in there as the receiving tight end. Andrews was recently involved in a major car wreck that could also derail the early portion of his season. He missed practice time. I’m not sure how you don’t worry about it. That’s coming from me who drafted Trey Sanders in a rookie draft and watched a car wreck essentially ruin his career.
Plus, when Andrews was good he was snagging touchdowns. King Henry is here now and that’s what he does. A real touchdown hog in that offense isn’t good news for fantasy owners of Andrews. Zay Flowers will soon become the alpha of this receiving room, which also wasn’t been a problem for Andrews’ owners a few years ago.
