The rollercoaster career of New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German continues, as he has now been placed on the restricted list for the rest of the season after submitting himself to a treatment center for alcohol abuse, the team announced Wednesday.
Mere weeks ago, on June 28, German was on top of the world after tossing a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics. It had been a bumpy year for him up until that point, but on that night he put himself in the history books, tossing the 24th perfect game in MLB History–the first since 2012.
But even before the perfect game, Domingo German was no stranger to being on the news. Back in 2019, German slapped his girlfriend while at a charity gala held by C.C Sabathia. It only got worse after they left as German had apparently been drinking and became very violent, forcing his girlfriend to lock herself in a room and call a friend for help.
It was overall a horrible situation and a serious lack of judgment on the part of German. MLB quickly investigated and was even quicker to hand out his punishment. He was placed on leave for the rest of the 2019 season and didn’t return until the 2021 season.
From there, it was a rather pedestrian couple of years of German. He was never great but never really horrible either; he was always able to find a way to earn a spot as a fourth or fifth arm in the rotation.
It seemed like a perfect chapter to have in a book on the life of German. Just when he is about to fade off into the world of irrelevance, he puts himself in MLB History forever. Truth be told, I’m glad German is getting the help he needs. I just hope it happens in enough time that he is still able to have some sort of career in MLB.
I’m wishing Domingo German all the best and hope he has a quick recovery. Alcohol abuse is no joke and isn’t above anybody no matter how famous you are. He may not be a perfect man, but we should all still be wishing the best for Domingo German.
It’s fair to say that few have had a career quite as crazy as German. There have been a lot of ups and even more downs. But hopefully, he can now get the help and treatment he has always needed. He may be an MLB player, but he is still just a person first.
