Does Porter Moser Make Oklahoma Dangerous in the Big 12?

Porter Moser might have gone under the radar for casual college basketball fans like myself. However, this is a big big big hire for Oklahoma and Porter Moser himself. Moser was the head coach at Loyola-Chicago since 2011. But probably no one knew who he was until maybe 2018 when Loyola-Chicago made the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Even then he was overshadowed by now 102-year-old Sister Jean. People like me credit her for Loyola’s success. While that could be a joke, there’s no denying there have might been some divine intervention for Loyola. Still, Porter Moser has been a helluva coach for this team and he is finally getting his chance in the Big 12.

In 2018, when the Ramblers made the tournament, they went all the way to the Final Four in their first NCAA tournament appearance. Moser was at the helm of that run and has never looked back. With Loyola playing in a Mid-Major conference like Missouri Valley, they have to win their conference tournament, or else they don’t go dancing. While they lost in their conference tournament in 2019 and with no tournament played in 2020 (thanks COVID-19) people may have thought the Ramblers were frauds. But they showed they are back at it again with their appearance and going all the way to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2021 tournament. Moser has led this team to no lower than 2nd after their famous Final Four run. It’s that right there that is giving him the shot to coach in the Big 12.

With talent sometimes scarce at Loyola, Moser has a better chance to succeed given the resources he has at Oklahoma. While the Big 12 is no cupcake conference, I think Moser is a helluva coach. He’s been able to keep Loyola relevant for years now. Some coaches might not have been cut out for the Big 12, like Shaka Smart, who has gone to Marquette. I think Moser is proven and will keep Oklahoma in the mix for conference championships and keep this team dancing in March. Oklahoma might be dangerous for years to come, or it might be another Shaka Smart, who knows.
