Does Lou Lamiorello Already Regret The Bo Horvat Extension?
Islanders fans should have confidence that Lou Lamiorello hasn’t totally lost it. The man still has swag and is still hilarious. After the Islanders traded for and then extended Bo Horvat, Islanders President of Hockey Operations Lou Lamiorello had a must watch quote when announcing the news. Stop what you’re doing and watch this.
“All I can tell you is it’s too long and it’s too much money,” Lamoriello said with a smile.
The funny thing is Lou is probably right. It’s too much money and too many years. Horvat, 27, signed an eight year, $68 million deal with the Islanders to prevent him from hitting the market. That type of deal will be paying Horvat an AAV of $8.5 million in his mid 30’s. Lou doesn’t care! It’s win now time for the Islanders baby!
Horvat is also currently on the heater of all heater seasons. The former Canucks captain has 54 points in 49 games and is set to smash his prior career high of 61 points. In fairness, Horvat may have just hit a new ceiling and changed his stick in the offseason. He’s a good player. Just not sure he’s a natural point per game guy all the time.
My point here is you can’t have it both ways. Give Lou his credit for not being a robot. A lot of general managers would have given you some cornball answer that meant nothing. Lou is out here working to put a winner on the ice and will let you know if he thinks it means maybe overpaying for something. If anything, Lou is still funny and that means he probably hasn’t totally lost his mind yet, right?
