Does the Kyle Pitts Hype Train Need to Pump the Brakes?

Kyle Pitts is awesome. He’s one of the greatest tight end prospects we’ve ever seen. He was a can’t miss prospect coming out of Florida. But is there a little too much hype surrounding Pitts? It’s important to remember that rookie tight ends routinely struggle. Trey put together a really helpful list of all the first-round tight ends in recent memory to compare their rookie-year stats. Spoiler: there’s nothing super great there.

Kyle Pitts Fantasy Outlook

Bottom line, recent history would suggest that Kyle Pitts won’t produce right away. Down the line, sure, but not immediately. He’s currently being drafted as TE4 in most fantasy drafts. Tight end is a weird position because there’s a clear top three (Travis Kelce, Darren Waller, George Kittle), and then nobody knows what to do. Given the first-year struggles of rookie tight ends, I don’t know that Pitts will wind up the TE4 at the end of the season. It’s entirely possible and maybe even likely that Noah Fant, T.J. Hockenson, and Mark Andrews finish above Pitts. Kyle Pitts will end up being better than each of those players, but for this year it’s a toss-up.

Keeper fantasy football leagues are a completely different animal. If you’re in a dynasty league, taking Kyle Pitts at TE4 is a good play because of what he projects to be. That’s the route where I think it’s completely understandable to take Pitts so early, because tight end is one slot where the positional advantage can be HUGE.

Is rookie Kyle Pitts a worthy TE4 for this year? It’s a tough call for sure, but he certainly could be worth the gamble over some of these other guys. If he bucks the trend of recent first-round tight end struggles, this could be an awesome place to get him. If you want guaranteed numbers, it’s probably best to go with another guy.
