If the Dodgers weren’t already dominating the offseason before they sure as hell are now. Is this the best offseason in baseball history? The Dodgers already signed Shohei Ohtani and then later added Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Now Teoscar Hernandez becomes the perfect cherry on top.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan was the first to report the news.
It should also be added that reporter Moises Fabian (via X) revealed the news even sooner. Passan added later that some of the money here is being deferred. $8.5 million will be deferred in small installments that range from 2030 to 2039. LA has used deferred to their advantage this offseason including with the Ohtani contract.
Hernandez, 31, slashed .258/.305/.435 over 678 plate appearances a season ago. It should be noted that Seattle is a tough place to hit. This is still an above league outfielder with right handed power. Hernandez hit 26 homers last season. That’s gravy when you’re adding that to this Dodgers lineup.
Hernandez won the Silver Slugger Award in 2020 and 2021. Is it impossible that he can do it again? He sure as hell is going to have a ton of protection in that lineup with a lot of runners on base. It’s hard not to love this move. It’s a one year deal with basically no risk. To add that bat for just financial resources is a no brainer.
The Red Sox were thought to be a contender here. Jiarmani did a great breakdown on those rumors. This move pretty much summarizes both of those team’s offseasons. The Dodgers got everyone and the Red Sox got Lucas Giolito on an experiment run. Yipee!
