Do The Mets Know Sean Manaea Sucks?

I had to do a double take when I saw this contract when I first woke up this morning. Sean Manaea got what? Is that a joke? The Mets signed Manaea to a two-year deal worth $28 million. I just have one question for the entire Mets’ brass. Are they aware that Manaea absolutely sucks?

I understand that the Mets have deep pockets now. I understand that they wanted another pitcher after missing out on Lucas Giolito. Giving Manaea $14 million per year makes zero sense. Not a lick of sense.

Did the Mets watch him before doing this deal? It’s hard to believe.

In 2022 with the Padres, Manaea posted a 4.96 ERA in 28 starts.

In 2023 with the Giants, Manaea posted a 4.44 ERA in 37 games eventually being demoted from the rotation.

For that type of performance, this is an egregious overpay. Furthermore, why do the Mets think they can fix him? If the Giants couldn’t do it, they’re not going to. The Giants have been extremely good at revitalizing pitchers too like Kevin Gausman. If they couldn’t do it, the Mets won’t fix him.

Manaea, 31, is a three-pitch pitcher that relies on precise location. He throws the fastball 56% of the time and it’s a mediocre pitch. A season ago, Manaea ranked in the 25th percentile in chase rate and 36th percentile in whiff rate. Also, his best offspeed pitch is a slider. That pitch he gave up a .284 average against and it just hangs over the plate looking virtually identical to his changeup.

This deal won’t work. If this is what the David Stearns era is going to look like, Steve Cohen wasted his time. Will this team ever win?

Good luck with this. That’s all I have to say. How many times will they have to look foolish before Uncle Steve calls me? I already owned Billy Eppler. I’ll do it again here too.
