I figured we would start here with the first 2025 NFL Draft profile of the year because it was an inside joke within the Vendetta Slack that nobody was allowed to say his year when he was first coming up at Clemson. Long story short; I picked DJ Uiagalelei in the first round of my rookie draft when he became eligible and it’s been pretty much downhill ever since.
I’m sure nobody cares but I was somehow able to rebound by trading him for an injured Christian Watson and then traded Watson for Ladd McConkey so we recovered just fine.
Story mode aside, let’s dive into anything and everything you need to know about DJ U as he enters the NFL.
I think this is the best place to start here. You can find this at the bottom of the Week 1 Stock notes from this past year.
Florida State was coming off a season where they were undefeated during the regular season and it’s like the karma gods stepped in once their fan base started crying over nothing. The decision to go with DJ U over Cam Ward totally destroyed Florida State’s season. FSU went 2-10 on the season and 1-7 in ACC play. It all started with DJ U who proved that he’s pretty much unplayable.
Let’s go back to the beginning because maybe this should have been more of a red flag at the time. Look, I’m a sicko when it comes to this stuff so I’m tracking these guys pretty much right after they’re ready to be done with high school. It’s important to understand recruiting and the Saturday game because if you don’t… how do you expect to know the Sunday game?
In reality, it all started here. It’s time for the 2019 Elite 11. An event that CJ Stroud eventually won and we all have seen what he’s become (nailed it). It’s important to track these quarterback events and Stroud’s NFL success is only further proof of just that. DJ U was the top ranked recruit in the country and he shows up to the Elite 11 event and basically decides to go home.
Looking back at it, maybe that’s something that should have been considered more of a red flag at the time. Was DJ U scared to compete? Did he see guys like Stroud and Bryce Young and say yeah… I’m not at that level?
Then DJ U pulls off the biggest one-hit wonder ever. Call him the Call me maybe girl because he goes to Notre Dame after Trevor Lawrence gets banged up and totally kicks their ass. Feel free to click that link in the last sentence because we never saw that guy again.
From there, it felt like the NFL’s version of the Greg Oden story. I talked about this over and over again how he just looked dead in the lower half. Zero instincts. Always two seconds late to make a decision. Carson Strong vibes all over again. The only difference was he was built like a house and could actually run with power but no actual elusiveness or speed. I think the worst part is every time you saw him he just kept getting worse and worse despite transferring all over the place.
Clemson he had some moments but it was a lot of rough stuff. Oregon State mostly sucked but you at least saw the tools that existed. Florida State he was virtually unplayable and looked broken. That’s really the best way to summarize it without overthinking this. Things got so bad that Florida State basically had to pretend he was still injured so he didn’t have to take the field again.
The numbers basically speak for themselves. Again, as a redshirt sophomore at Clemson, it felt like he still had a chance to be something. When you have five starts as a senior when you’re supposed to be fully developed and you put together a 4-6 TD to INT ratio, maybe he just sucks. 6.8 yards per attempt with a 36.5 QBR and 53.8 completion rate this past year with a team that won a ton of games the year before… what more is there to say?
I think NFL evaluators said plenty when he didn’t even get an invite to the Combine. For as talented as he was coming out of high school, he just feels broken and when you’re not even a Combine invite and they’re so desperate for throwers that Matt Corral was there, I just don’t know if it’s necessary to crush the guy anymore.
Uiagalelei gets an undrafted grade from me and I highly doubt anybody is drafting him. It’s a matter of if anyone even bothers to give him a shot during the preseason. Outside of a tryout at fullback, I don’t see the point.
