Did The Ravens Overpay Odell Beckham?
I think we all know the answer to this question. However, it goes beyond giving $15 million guaranteed to a player that didn’t play a single snap last year. This was an act of desperation to make things right with the ultimate cancer. The Ravens continue to double and triple down on all the wrong things; drama, distractions, and headaches. Of course, the Ravens overpaid for OBJ. I’m not an Allen Lazard fan but he got one of the bigger wide receiver contracts on the open market. OBJ got $15 million guaranteed for one year. With a chance to make $3 million more. Lazard got $22 million guaranteed over the life of his FOUR-year deal. Again, Lazard played last year. OBJ did not.
Can we just be real with what Beckham is at this stage of his career? Brittle, unreliable, and declining would all be words to describe OBJ at this point. Oh, he’s loud too. The one handed catch guy from New York is gone. OBJ has suffered a number of lower body injuries during his time in the NFL and is now 30. Your number one wide receiver is brittle. So is your quarterback. A recipe for a disaster is coming…
Did you know in 2021 OBJ averaged 38.7 yards per game in 14 games played. The year before he had 319 yards total in another injury plagued season. It’s impossible to justify this contract other than being an olive branch for the brat that is Lamar Jackson.
Until Lamar signs on the dotted line, he’s still available for other teams to try to sign. However, the smart people already know how this story ends if the Ravens do the wrong thing and commit to this OBJ / Lamar marriage. Chasing their tails and left in the dust never able to overcome the real elite teams with premier quarterbacks (Burrow, Allen, Mahomes) in the AFC.
