Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich Confirms Club is For Sale

Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich confirmed that the club is for sale in a statement released on Wednesday.

“I would like to address the speculation in media over the past few days in relation to my ownership of Chelsea FC,” Abramovich said. “As I have stated before, I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the Club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the Club, the fans, the employees, as well as the Club’s sponsors and partners.”

Abramovich, who has owned the club since 2003, is looking to sell for around £3 billion, according to ESPN and various other reports. The 55-year-old purchased the club for £140 million and helped steward the club to 21 trophies during his ownership.

All net proceeds from the sale of Chelsea FC will be donated to benefit “the victims of the war in Ukraine,” Abramovich said. The Russian oligarch came under notable fire and pressure when Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine last week, as Abramovich has alleged links to Vladimir Putin’s regime. Abramovich has denied any potential relationships with the Russian president.

There are numerous potential suitors for Chelsea’s ownership, including Swiss businessman Hansjoerg Wyss and American businessman Todd Boehly.

Abramovich concluded his statement with a thankful message to the club and its supporters.

“I hope that I will be able to visit Stamford Bridge one last time to say goodbye to all of you in person,” Abramovich said. “It has been a privilege of a lifetime to be part of Chelsea FC and I am proud of all our joint achievements. Chelsea Football Club and its supporters will always be in my heart.”
