The final year of Murray’s four-year extension will be a player option, according to NBA Insider Shams Charania.
Murray, 27, was originally set to enter the final year of his contract in 2023-24. Now, he will remain under contract with Atlanta until his age 31 season.
Last season was Murray’s Hawks debut after the franchise acquired him in the offseason. Unfournelty for Atlanta, this did not result in much success as they finished the regular season with 41 wins before being bounced in the first round of the playoffs.
In 2022-23, Murray was productive from an individual standpoint as he finished the season averaging 20.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. On the defensive end of the court, he contributed 1.5 steals per game.
The Hawks will now allocate approximately $70 million each season to its All-Star guard pairing of Murray and Trae Young.
The Hawks have worked to flush out its core this offseason. This began with trading big man John Collins to the Utah Jazz. The long-term cap relief of the Collins trade certainly helped Atlanta extend Murray.
Now, the team is left to determine the future of Clint Capela, De’Andre Hunter, and Bogdan Bogdanovic who are all on hefty contracts. This looms large as Onyeka Okongwu and Saddiq Bey are extension-eligible players on expiring deals.
