Daubert’s 2020 NFL Draft Mailbag 7.0

2020 NFL Draft
It’s time for another 2020 NFL Draft mailbag. It’s edition 7.0 answering a question on the Raiders and ranting about the safeties.

Another week closer to the 2020 NFL Draft which means we have another mailbag. God, does this coronavirus suck. The 2020 NFL Draft is the only thing we have to look forward to. That and my new discovery of Corona Refresca. Get the guava flavor, boy are they good. Anyway, let’s get down to business. One question this week and my weekly rant.

You came to the right place, Mr. Chick. Let’s break down some of the possibilities. If Jerry Jeudy is on the board when they pick at 12, I think he’s the pick. Here are some reasons why. A year ago they really wanted Antonio Brown. WHY? Because he fits the offense. Tyrell Williams serves as the big body target and Hunter Renfrow can work around in the slot. That leaves the other receiver spot open. Someone that can run great routes in the West Coast offense and create wide open throws. The Raiders told everybody a year ago with Antonio Brown what sort of skill set the Raiders are looking for.

That’s Jerry Jeudy. A killer route runner who can get open but also has top end speed. If Jeudy is on the board, I’ll be shocked if Vegas doesn’t pick him. They might even move up a few sports to secure him. In their ideal world, I think that involves Jeudy. The last time they drafted a killer route runner in the first round out of Alabama, that was Amari Cooper. I think they would love to go that route again.

Okay, now it’s time for the rant. Who is safety 1, Xavier McKinney or Grant Delpit? My pick would be Delpit. It’s a passing league. You need safeties that can stop players like George Kittle and Travis Kelce. Probably not a coincidence those two guys were in the Super Bowl. This was a big X-Factor. Tyrann Mathieu had the ability to slow down Kittle. The same can’t be said for whatever the 49ers were throwing out there at safety.

Ask yourself, who would you rather have, Tyrann Mathieu or Landon Collins? That’s the question. Collins is a good player and he really helps in the run game but someone like Mathieu changes outcomes in coverage. That’s what Delpit has a chance to give you. So what that he misses a few tackles. He’s an elite centerfielder in coverage with ball skills. Those guys don’t fail at the NFL level. Delpit is the best safety in the 2020 NFL Draft.
