D’Andre Swift traded to the Eagles

The rich get richer! In lieu of signing David Montgomery in free agency as well as selecting former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs No. 12 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions have traded star running back D’Andre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport first reported Saturday.

The two teams swapped 2023 seventh-round picks, while the Lions also received a 2025 fourth-round pick in return, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Swift is entering the last year of his rookie contract with a $1.77 million base salary and carries a $2.72 million cap hit, per Over The Cap. Swift rushed for 542 yards on 5.5 yards per carry with five rushing touchdowns last season, adding 48 catches for 389 yards and three touchdowns. In three years with Detroit, he tallied 1,680 rushing yards, 1,198 receiving yards and 25 total touchdowns (18 rushing, seven receiving).

This marks the second consecutive draft where the Eagles have traded for a veteran skill position player — last year for former Tennessee Titans wide receiver A.J. Brown in the first round. Now, the Eagles add to their stable of tailbacks that included Rashaad Penny, Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott and Trey Sermon.

Have yourself a draft, Howie Roseman.

The Eagles, who made the Super Bowl in 2023, were already considered the winners of the draft thus far, having continued stockpiling Georgia defenders (good strategy, eh?) after selecting Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean in 2022. They selected Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round plus Kelee Ringo at the start of the fourth round.

The Swift trade further vindicates that, as Philadelphia appears to be the presumptive favorite to make it out of the NFC yet again. After the Lions’ cataclysmic draft, it looks like Vendetta’s Don is happy about Swift in green because of his fantasy team.

This is a breaking news story. Stay tuned for updates.
