On Monday, the UFC and WWE joined forces in a merger of the two companies. The UFC is the biggest and most popular mixed martial arts promotion in the world, meanwhile, the WWE is the most popular wrestling promotion today and boasts an extensive history of entertaining fans for multiple decades. It will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds, as this is gigantic news that will shake up both companies. However, this merger does open the door for some fun potential matchups. Brock Lesnar is an extremely popular figure in the WWE and he was even a former heavyweight champion in the UFC.
Lesnar has not fought in the UFC in a long time, but he is active in the WWE. He just fought and defeated Omos in the opening fight of WrestleMania 39 Night Two. The fight was not the best of the night, but there were some memorable moments.
However, his last fight in the UFC was against Mark Hunt in 2016 in a no-contest which was overturned. Lesnar is just 4-3 in the UFC, though he did win three different heavyweight championship fights. Lesnar has received some of the “Dana White privilege” that is now a modern term in the UFC circle nowadays.
Lesnar has received favorable treatment before, so could he possibly get some again in the form of a UFC heavyweight title fight against Jon Jones? It would not surprise me. Lesnar is a big name and the UFC obsesses over showcasing heavyweight fights. I think the money makes sense for the UFC and I think Jones would be happy with the easy paycheck.
There is one big problem concerning the possibility of Lesnar facing Jones, as the latter might already be booked to fight former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. This is not set in stone but it is clear that this is the fight White wants to do in the summer. Lesnar can maybe fight one other guy in the top five, depending on how serious he would be about a comeback, but if he loses the hype around a Lesnar-Jones bout dissipates.
This UFC-WWE merger has created some fun opportunities for both companies, and a Lesnar return to the octagon would get some attention from fans. Additionally, any Jones fight will bring major viewership, especially after he just became the heavyweight champion following his victory over Ciryl Gane in early March.
It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out, but knowing the UFC, there is a decent chance that fans will have this fight forced onto them.
