Colin Kaepernick, B&J Release ‘Change the Whirled’
No, this is not satire. It might seem like it, but this is a real thing. Activist and former NFL QB Colin Kaepernick is collaborating with Ben & Jerry’s. Together, they are releasing a new flavor: ‘Change the Whirled.’
This new flavor is a vegan, non-dairy ice cream with a sunflower butter base. It contains caramel, fudge chips, graham cracker swirls, and chocolate cookie swirls.
Ben & Jerry’s, a company that is no stranger to promoting social causes, released a video promoting the new flavor. Here’s what they had to say:
Ready to Change the Whirled? Ben & Jerry’s and Colin Kaepernick are teaming up in the struggle against police violence, systemic racism, and white supremacy.
It’s time to dismantle systems of oppression, and create alternatives rooted in community, accountability, and well-being. This is what resistance looks like, and it’s rooted in joy, love, and justice.
All of Colin’s proceeds from our new, certified vegan, non-dairy flavor go to Know Your Rights Camp, an organization he launched in 2016 to advance the liberation of Black and Brown people.
Let’s serve up some joy on the journey to justice. Together, we can Change the Whirled.

Regardless of your opinion on Kaepernick and what he stands for, I’m sure not many people expected his activism to enter the frozen food section.
Some of the jokes on social media seem to have written themselves. One Instagram user commented, “Does it come with a little bench the ice cream carton can ride in the freezer?”
Kaepernick Pivots from Football to Activism
Colin Kaepernick, formerly the quarterback of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, was famously benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert. Kaepernick would finish out that 2016 season, and opted out of his contract in the offseason. He has not played in the NFL since, instead focusing on the Know Your Rights Camp and other ventures.
Many have clamored for Kaepernick to re-enter the league, saying he was blackballed for his protests. Others maintain that he should not be in the league based purely on performance.
My only request in all this is that someone gives an honest review of this new ice cream flavor. Non-dairy vegan ice cream doesn’t sound that great to me, but I’ll need someone to check that.
