Christian Eriksen made his transfer to Manchester United official on Friday, signing a three-year contract through June 2025. After suffering a cardiac arrest 398 days ago in front of the entire world at the 2020 Euros, the Danish captain initially thought he’d never be able to step on the field again, but that tune quickly changed in the days after. Nine months later, in his first international appearance since the incident, he came back stronger than ever scoring a goal for Denmark in late March. On top of that, after signing for Brentford FC in the January transfer window, he revitalized the club’s attack and helped them finish 13th in the English Premier League just one year after competing in the Championship.
Regardless of whether you’re a Manchester United fan or not, you can’t help but appreciate the journey Eriksen has been on. From a life-threatening experience to playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world is a special story and deserves to be celebrated.
Incredibly, Eriksen still has something in the tank and this signing shouldn’t just be viewed as a feel-good story. He will likely play as a central midfielder, competing for a spot in the starting 11 with the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay. Red Devil fans have seemed to have a love–hate relationship with the “McFred” combo in the middle of the park, but with Eriksen in town, they probably won’t have to worry about their conflicting feelings too much, as it’s unlikely we see much of that duo.
This summer is pivotal for Manchester United’s rebuild and although moves like Eriksen help, there are still bigger decisions that will affect their success this season. Where will Cristiano Ronaldo be going and how much can they sell him for? Will they be able to sign Frenkie De Jong? Will Lisandro Martinez, their new €46 million signing, be able to adjust to the physicality of the Premier League?
Erik ten Hag certainly has a job ahead of him this season and the fans that bleed red will expect nothing short of the glory that Manchester United is so commonly used to bathing in. Ten Hag has had the freedom to get his targets and now the pressure will be on him to perform. Eriksen, the man who started his career at Ajax, will be an important piece of United’s puzzle as ten Hag tries to recreate the success he had at the Dutch side in Manchester.
