Transfer Saga Shock: Lorenzo Insigne to Join Toronto FC

Napoli winger and Italian international, Lorenzo Insigne, has signed a pre-contract deal with MLS side Toronto FC, the club announced Saturday. The 30-year-old is still in his prime and starred for Italy in the nation’s winning campaign at the 2020(1) Euros.

When rumors of Insigne’s move began to circulate weeks ago, many football fans were shocked to see a potential move from Italy to North America on the horizon. The move is drawing a lot of comparison to Sebastian Giovinco’s transfer from Juventus to Toronto FC at the age of 28 and illustrates the increasing pull MLS clubs can have on international stars.

Insigne signed a four-year deal with Toronto FC and will complete the move as a designated player on July 1, 2022, pending the confirmation of his international transfer certificate. He has spent most of his career with Napoli, appearing in 319 games and scoring 89 goals. Insigne also has 53 appearances for Italy, tallying 10 goals.

Toronto FC head coach and sporting director, Bob Bradley, called Insigne’s attacking ability “special.”

“We are all looking forward to having Lorenzo join us this summer. His ability to create chances for himself and his teammates is special. Having watched him for many years, I also know he’s also a player who works for the team. Lorenzo is the kind of player you come to watch, because there’s always a chance, he’ll do something unforgettable.”

Of Insigne’s impending arrival, Toronto FC president Bill Manning expressed the historical importance of the move and his excitement at the Italian’s potentially profound effect on the field for the club.

“This is a historic and exciting day for our club. Lorenzo is a world class attacking player in the prime of his career. He was a European champion with Italy and has performed on the biggest stages during his club career with Napoli. Lorenzo has the talent to change games. He plays the game with joy and passion, and our fans and supporters are going to love watching him as a member of our team.”
