At around 12:45 p.m. ET, Denmark star midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field in a EURO 2020 group stage match against Finland. It happened during a throw-in, Eriksen checked to the ball and stumbled a few steps before collapsing on his stomach as the ball hit his knees. There was immediate concern, with medics rushing onto the pitch as both squads huddled around Eriksen. A wall of flags and players formed around Eriksen as CPR was administered. Around 10-15 minutes later, the Inter Milan star was carried off in a stretcher, appearing to be conscious with an oxygen mask around his face.
That is all we know right now, and likely that is all we will know for the next few hours. The match between Denmark and Finland was suspended, and EURO officials are set to determine what the next stages are in the coming hours.
But Eriksen appeared conscious, and after as scary a scene as that was, that’s all we can ask for.
Reports are that he was taken to a hospital, is awake and conscious and currently undergoing further examinations according to international football insider Fabrizio Romano.
There is surely much more to unfold, but as the sports world stood still with bated breath for the past hour, it is a great sign that Eriksen, according to UEFA, is awake and stabilized at the hospital. Whether or not the 2020 European Championship will continue today is up in the air. Belgium is set to face Russia at 3 p.m. ET and reports are that UEFA is currently meeting to discuss what the tournament will look like in the coming days. But again, Eriksen is awake and being administered treatment, and that’s the most important thing.
Latest reports indicate that Eriksen is out of danger and talking. The match is set to resume at 2:30 p.m. ET.
