Tyrann Mathieu

The Chiefs have been known as the swiss cheese defense. If they don’t score 50, the Chiefs lose. That’s the way it’s been. Today, the Chiefs took a step in the right direction to fix that mess. The Honey Badger is coming to Kansas City. Tyrann Mathieu has signed a 3-year deal with the Chiefs worth $42 million. It’s a significant upgrade over the one-year deal he settled for last year.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:

Sometimes I really disagree with Pro Football Focus. They graded the honey badger as the 21st best safety in the NFL a year ago. While that’s not bad in any way shape or form, Mathieu is much better than that. Mathieu is always around the football. In 6 NFL seasons, Mathieu has 13 career interceptions.

I love this potential safety duo the Chiefs have. Pair the honey badger with Eric Berry! Oh, boy! Both safeties have great range and can cover their ass off. It has to be the best safety duo in the NFL barring injury.

The Chiefs had to part ways with Justin Houston to get the deal done. KC will probably search for linebacker and pass rush help after adding Mathieu. New defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has a lot of work to do even after adding Mathieu. The Chiefs gave up 405 yards per game under Bob Sutton.

The Texans will have to look for a new safety. Their secondary is a mess at the moment. Kevin Johnson signed with the Bills. Kareem Jackson is an impending free agent. Houston has a ton of work to do to fix the back end. They ranked 28th in the NFL in pass defense in 2018.
