Chicago Bears Hire Matt Eberflus As New Head Coach

The Chicago Bears are hiring former Colts’ defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus as their new head coach, per Adam Schefter. After hiring an offensive guy in Matt Nagy years ago, they go a very different route this head coaching cycle.

So once again, the Chicago Bears have a general manager named Ryan, and a head coach named Matt. Funny how things work right? In all seriousness, Matt Eberflus is very deserving of this job. He was the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021. He actually also played college football as a linebacker at Toledo and started from 1988 to 1991. He was a walk-on who earned all-league honors, and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Eberflus was with the Colts when they drafted Darius Leonard. During his time there, Leonard developed into a top linebacker in the NFL, and one who has seemingly mastered the Peanut Punch in a way that effectively forces fumbles and doesn’t sacrifice making the tackle if the ball doesn’t come out. The Colts have had one of the best defenses in the NFL over recent years, and it’s clear that the Chicago Bears are hoping that defensive dominance can be brought over to Chicago.

Now, with Eberflus being a defensive coach, this puts immense pressure on their next hire. The next offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears will make or break Eberflus’ career as a head coach. The development of Justin Fields is what matters most for the success of everyone in Chicago. If Fields doesn’t develop, everyone is getting fired in four years and it’s time to start over yet again from ground zero.
