The Oklahoma City Thunder got their cake and will eat it too. The Thunder landed Chet Holmgren with the second pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Best of all, he’s not going to play at all during his rookie season so the tank for Victor Wembanyama is more than on the table. It’s all going according to plan for Sam Presti who is virtually Sam Hinkie but for some reason doesn’t get blasted for it.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the injury news on Chet Holmgren:
Score one for the Chet hates. All of the people that said Holmgren was too frail and would get injured win this round. Obviously, the Chet story isn’t over yet but we’re going to have to wait a long time to see the former Gonzaga product again. Maybe no pro-am games next offseason?
Holmgren, 20, got hurt on a fastbreak while guarding LeBron James. Jayson Tatum, Paolo Banchero, Dejounte Murray and Aaron Gordon were other players at the event. In fact, it was later canceled because of court conditions.
During the Las Vegas Summer League, Holmgren averaged 14.0 points and 8.4 rebounds in five games. It was a strong showing for the Thunder rookie. The potential is obviously there. The red flags may also be undeniably there too.
It’s a sad day for NBA fans that will be robbed of the chance to watch a new generational talent enter the sport. We wish Chet Holmgren a speedy recovery.
