Former number two overall pick Chase Young has agreed to sign with the New Orleans Saints on a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
According to Schefter, the deal will be $13 million in full guaranteed. The Saints signed one of the best remaining free agents left on the market.
Young, who will turn 25 in April, last played for the Washington Commanders and the San Francisco 49ers, after he was traded in the middle of last season.
Young registered 7.5 sacks and 25 total sacks last season. Young also recorded a sack on Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl 58. The 49ers would eventually lose the Super Bowl in overtime, 22-25. Young also had eight tackles in the San Fran’s playoff journey.
Young wasn’t able to do much in his time with San Fran, who were already a Super Bowl contender before they reached the Big Game, as he recorded only 2.5 sacks in nine regular season appearances for the team.
The Saints will pair the DE with star defensive tackle Cameron Jordan and bolster the teams’ defensive line, who had an offseason with two sacks last season. With Young on the team, the opposing offensive line will stop the main focus on Jordan.
New Orleans was able to make this deal happen due to them restructuring contracts, which created just enough cap space for Young’s fully guaranteed deal.
The Saints also released receiver Michael Thomas earlier in free agency, who has not played in many games the past few seasons for the team due to many occurring injuries. Thomas was also in the media for a social media squabble with a reporter about his release.
