The New Orleans Saints are planning to release wide receiver Michael Thomas before the start of the league year on March 13, Saints beat reporter Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com first reported Thursday.
Thomas has played in just 13 combined games over the last three seasons, including missing the entire 2021 season with ankle surgery while also suffering a toe dislocation plus a Grade 2 MCL Sprain in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, respectively.
According to Duncan, the move is not a matter of “if,” but when, with cutting Thomas. According to Over The Cap, the Saints would lose roughly $7.98 million in cap space in 2024 if it used the pre-June 1 designation for waiving him; conversely, it would save $1.21 million if it used its post-June 1 designation.
If this is the last we see of Thomas in the Saints uniform, the former 2016 second-round pick recorded 565 career catches for 6,569 yards and 36 touchdowns with New Orleans, including two monstrous seasons in 2018-19.
Thomas, a two-time first-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler, finished with an NFL-most 125 catches for 1,405 yards and nine touchdowns in 2018, followed by leading the league in both catches (149) and yards (1,725) with nine scores in 2019. He won Offensive Player of the Year that season.
Unfortunately, he has not appeared in more than 10 games since. The three-time Pro Bowler hauled in just 39 catches for 448 yards and one touchdown last season. He will be entering his age-31 season.
Let’s just say that Thomas saw the news, and did not think kindly of Duncan’s reporting:
We’ll see if the Saints follow through. What do you think about New Orleans cutting Thomas … or his reaction? Let us know in the comments!
