Cardinals Claim Michael Carter
It didn’t take Michael Carter long to find a new home after the Jets waived him. The Cardinals were just sitting there waiting on the waiver wire and have put in a claim for the former Jets running back. Carter is officially heading to Arizona.
Adam Schefter over at ESPN was the first to report the news:
The Cardinals actually feel like a pretty good fit for Carter. Arizona has tried out a bunch of running backs including Tony Jones, Damien Williams, Emari Demarcado, and Keontay Ingram. Carter should be able to carve out a role, especially as a pass catcher. James Conner is really the only back that Arizona can truly count on.
Kyler Murray is back healthy now too so it’s not like this Cardinals team is totally lost offensively. Yes, they might be 2-8 but they’re certainly more functional on the offensive side of the ball with Kyler back. More than anything, Carter can help as a receiving running back. That’s his best skillset.
Again, it’s certainly fair to question the Jets on this move. I mentioned it briefly in the link in the first paragraph. Why did the Jets cut bait here when they stink? Carter is controllable for another season on his rookie contract. If you were going to cut a back in New York, it probably should have been Dalvin Cook. Joe Douglas can do whatever he wants but the idea that he thinks his team is a contender remains laughable. There is a reason why Carter didn’t make it very far down the waiver wire.
