Jets Cut RB Michael Carter

Notice I had to include RB in the title because the Jets technically had two players named Michael Carter on their team. Yes, the third-year running back out of North Carolina is the one the Jets are releasing.

The team was the first to release the news. They had their own press release for the move.

I’m not going to sit here and act like this is overly surprising. Carter was electric as a rookie and failed to recapture that magic after. On the season, Carter has notched 8 carries for 38 yards as well as 15 receptions for 68 yards. Apparently, word on the street is the breaking point was one Carter missed a key block in pass pro.

With that said, I don’t really understand this move. Why does this team continue to pretend their contenders? Nobody believes this team is going anywhere this year. If you’re going to cut a back, why didn’t you cut Dalvin Cook? What’s the point of carrying Cook on the roster? Especially with the season he’s having and the way he’s openly saying that he wants out. Carter at least fits the timeline better while still being on a rookie contract. Furthermore, why are you counting on Carter to be a blocker in pass pro? He’s basically a receiver. That’s on them for being dumb.

Israel Abanikanda might get more carries now that Carter is gone. I guess that’s the only positive. The Pittsburgh product has a lot of potential and was one of my favorites in the draft class.
