Brock Purdy burst onto the scene out of nowhere last season. The former Iowa State quarterback was the 262nd pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, a position most commonly referred to as “Mr. Irrelevent.” When the two quarterbacks ahead of him went down with injuries, Purdy got his chance and never looked back. Purdy led San Francisco all the way to the NFC Championship before going down with an injury. Now that he seems healthy, the question should be asked, can Brock Purdy lead the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl?
This is, of course, assuming he wins the position battle with Trey Lance. The 49ers gave up a lot to move up in the 2021 Draft for Lance. But Purdy has the experience now over Lance. Plus, reports from before the NFL Draft have the 49ers listing to trade calls about Lance and other teams assuming Purdy is the future starter.
Sam Darnold is there too, but I don’t see him competing for the starting spot. It’s not out of the realm of possibility to see him play, but only if injuries persist. With Jimmy Garoppolo finally gone, the job is Purdy’s to lose.
So let’s say Brock Purdy is the Week 1 starter. Can he be consistent? The Kyle Shanahan offense is an extremely QB-friendly one. No one thought Garoppolo was a world-beater but still led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance. Purdy showed good control of the offense and put up good numbers in his five regular season stats. He even won two playoff games!
What helps Purdy is not just an offensive genius of a coach, but the weapons around him. Deebo Samuel is a stud and one of the best receivers in the league. Christian McCaffery might be the most versatile running back in the NFL if he can stay healthy. The offensive line is good and the defense is something fierce.
Purdy also benefits from playing in the weaker NFC. The only other team that has a legitimate chance at winning a Super Bowl in the NFC is the Philadelphia Eagles. I don’t trust the Cowboys and everyone else seems to be in different stages of rebuilding. The 49ers might not be the best in a weak NFC, but anything can happen in football.
So can Brock Purdy lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl? Anything is possible. Purdy is in a great environment to make it happen. He doesn’t have to do too much and just needs to stay healthy. It would be an incredible story, and I’m a sucker for a good story.
