Report: The 49ers are receiving trade calls for Trey Lance
Nearly a week ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have fielded trade calls for third-year quarterback and former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday.
Rapoport specifies that San Francisco was only receiving calls, not “making them”, with teams assuming second-year quarterback Brock Purdy — who’s coming off offseason elbow surgery — will be the starting quarterback next fall.
If Purdy does end up being the starter, it makes sense that teams in need of a quarterback would be calling about Lance, especially after the 49ers signed Sam Darnold earlier this offseason.
While the cost for Lance might not be incredibly steep, it’d be ideal for San Francisco to acquire pick compensation for the 2023 draft — when their first pick not being until the 3rd round (No. 99). The season is still a long way out and who knows how healthy both Lance and Purdy by the season’s start, possibly hindering their willingness to trade him, per Rapoport.
Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 last year after playing only six games (two starts) as a rookie in 2021. He’s completed 54.9 percent of his passes for 797 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in eight career games, adding 235 rushing yards (on 54 attempts) with one score on the ground as well.
San Francisco traded three first-round picks plus a 2022 compensatory pick ahead of the 2021 draft to move up from No. 12 to No. 3. Now, the leaking of this report could suggest the 49ers are looking to part with Lance for far less than what they traded to get him — even though they might not be in the perfect position to.
