3 Potential Landing Spots For Russell Wilson In 2024
With the news coming down this week that the Denver Broncos would be benching quarterback Russell Wilson, the expectation is that he will not be on the roster in 2024. Who Denver chooses to go with to address the position will be something to watch, but we will also want to keep an eye on where Wilson will end up. Here, we will take a look at three potential landing spots for the former Super Bowl winner, and if they would be good fits.
Atlanta Falcons:
First on the list of potential homes for Russell Wilson in 2024 is the Atlanta Falcons. It is apparent this is a run-first offense, which would keep the pressure off Wilson as he can rely on a stacked backfield. The Falcons have very good weapons on the outside as well, which would be a clear upgrade over the lack of talent he played with in Denver.
Atlanta will have a good draft pick in April, which they could use to either address the offensive line, grab another weapon on the outside or beef up the defensive line. The only issue is he would have to play for Arthur Smith if he even keeps his job after this year, and that would likely be a detractor.
New England Patriots:
Is there a worse QB room in the NFL right now than the group up in Foxborough? It is painfully apparent that neither Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe are the answer at the position, and while New England could be in line for one of the two headlining QBs in the upcoming draft, what if Bill Belichick decides to stay put and grab a vet and build around him?
The defense seems to be in a really good spot despite having some major injuries, and if he wanted to, Bill would decide instead of a rebuild, he jump-starts it with Russell Wilson. Also, doesn’t Wilson just feel like a Belichick guy?
New York Giants:
I know what you’re thinking. Yes, the Giants did sign Daniel Jones to an absurd extension in March. However, if the Giants release Jones with a post-June-1st designation, he doesn’t have a worse cap hit on the books.
The Giants are in a similar situation as New England where they will be picking fairly high up in the draft, in range for one of the incoming QBs, but could pivot and use that pick to get a weapon at receiver or beef the offensive line. The only problem is that the NFC East is so stacked right now with Dallas and Philadelphia being serious contenders, it might make the Giants a less appealing option.
For my money, those are the three teams who we will likely hear the most in the coming months about a potential home for Russell Wilson. But there are a few other teams that I would not be shocked to hear in the mix.
Minnesota currently does not have a bonafide starter entering 2024 with Kirk Cousins‘ status up in the air and no heir apparent waiting in the wings. They surprised a lot of people with how competitive they were this year and could be an exciting spot. The Commanders sound like they are on the fence about Sam Howell, which is a mistake but that’s another issue for another time and could be in the mix as well. As much as it paints me to say, there seems to be a lot of chatter about Wilson landing in Pittsburgh, which I want to be on record as saying I would hate.
Was it ALL Russell Wilson’s fault that his tenure in Denver was a failure? Not exactly. Is he unfairly getting all of the blame? Yes. However, he has a real chance to go somewhere else and stick it to Denver for giving up on him too soon. This will be a story to watch as we enter 2024.
